Heat resistance of xerophilic fungi based on microscopical assessment of spore survival.

چکیده
An improved viable counting technique was developed to facilitate study of the heat resistance of fungal spores. Spores were heated and subsequently incubated in the same medium. After germination, hyphae and germ tubes were stained with lactofuchsin, and the germinated spores were counted with the aid of a microscope. A number of xerophilic strains were examined, mostly isolates from spoiled highmoisture prunes. Of these, ascospores of Aspergillus chevalieri, A. mangini, and Xeromyces bisporus were the most heat-resistant. A decimal reduction curve obtained for A. chevalieri was specified by a z value of 23 F and an F(180) of 2.2 min.

Quantification of spore resistance for assessment and optimization of heating processes: a never-ending story.
The assessment and optimization of food heating processes require knowledge of the thermal resistance of target spores. Although the concept of spore resistance may seem simple, the establishment of a reliable quantification system for characterizing the heat resistance of spores has proven far more complex than imagined by early researchers. This paper points out the main difficulties encounte...
متن کاملEffect of ageing heat treatment on corrosion behaviorof 17-4 PH stainless steel in 3.5% NaCl
The 17-4PH alloy is a martensitic stainless steel with 3–5 wt% Cu, strengthened by the precipitation hardening. Due to excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and ease of heat treatment, this alloy has unique applications in nuclear power plants and marine constructions. In this paper, the influence of ageing heat treatment, solution annealing followed by ageing at 480, 550 and 62...
متن کاملOccurrence of a Highly Heat-Sensitive Spore Subpopulation of Bacillus coagulans STCC 4522 and Its Conversion to a More Heat-Stable Form.
The profile of the survival curves, at different heating temperatures, of B. coagulans STCC 4522 sporulated at 52(deg)C has been studied, focusing on the early moments of treatment. A highly heat-sensitive spore subpopulation that includes more than 90% of the total spore population has been found. This heat-sensitive spore fraction was inactivated after 2 s of treatment at 111(deg)C. Its heat ...

A study was conducted to assess the durable resistance in a near isogenic line of spring wheat (Triticum aestivalis L.), possessing resistance gene Yr-18 to some isolates (race specific resistance) of stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici), namely Thatcher Yr-18 and durable resistance of an cultivar of spring wheat to all isolates of stripe rust (race non- specific resistance), namel...
متن کاملAlkyl hydroperoxide reductase, catalase, MrgA, and superoxide dismutase are not involved in resistance of Bacillus subtilis spores to heat or oxidizing agents.
Only a single superoxide dismutase (SodA) was detected in Bacillus subtilis, and growing cells of a sodA mutant exhibited paraquat sensitivity as well as a growth defect and reduced survival at an elevated temperature. However, the sodA mutation had no effect on the heat or hydrogen peroxide resistance of wild-type spores or spores lacking the two major DNA protective alpha/beta-type small, aci...
